3 Interesting Facts About the Java Programming Language
1. Java’s Original Name Was Oak
James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton, working at Sun Microsystems, designed and created the Java programming language in 1991 to develop software for interactive television systems. Initially, they named the language Oak, simply because there was an oak tree outside James Gosling’s house. Later, Sun Microsystems decided to rename Oak to Java for commercial purposes and to avoid legal issues with another computer company that already had the name Oak.
2. Java Was Created by Accident
At first, James Gosling had no intention of creating a new programming language. His team was working on a set-top box project using C++. While cleaning up and reorganizing the messy source code, they realized the need for a more platform-independent and simpler programming language. And that’s how Java (initially Oak) was born.
3. Java Is One of the World’s Most Popular Programming Languages
Ranked just after the C language, Java holds second place in terms of global popularity. It has consistently remained in the Top 5 programming languages for over a decade. One of the reasons Java is so well-loved is because of its syntax, which is close to English, and its ability to be used across multiple hardware platforms. Moreover, the Java developer community is one of the largest and most active in the world.
